What You Need to Play


Number of Players

  • 1 or more players
  • Can be played solo or competitively with multiple players

Objective of the Game

The goal is to cover (shut) as many numbers as possible during your turn.

  • If you cover all numbers in one turn, you “Shut the Box
  • The overall objective is to finish with the lowest score after a set number of rounds

Setup

  1. Place all numbered tiles in the upright (open) position.
  2. Decide the order of play.
  3. The first player rolls both dice to begin.

How to Play

  1. Roll both dice.
  2. Add the numbers shown on the dice.
  3. Cover one set of tiles that match the total or combine numbers to equal the total.

Example:
If you roll a 5 and a 4 (total = 9), you can cover one combination of the following:

  • 9
  • 8 + 1
  • 7 + 2
  • 6 + 3
  • 5 + 4
  • 6 + 2 + 1
  1. Continue rolling and covering numbers until no valid moves remain.
  2. Once you cannot cover any numbers, your turn ends.

One Die Rule (Optional)

Once tiles 7, 8, and 9 are covered, players may choose to roll one die instead of two.

Some variations allow one die when the total of remaining tiles is 6 or less.


Scoring

At the end of your turn:

  • Add up all uncovered numbers
  • This total is your score (lower is better)

Example:
Uncovered tiles: 1, 6, 8 → Score = 15

Alternative scoring:
Read digits left to right → Score = 168

The player with the lowest total score after all rounds wins.


Alternative Game Variations

Beginner Version

  • Remove tiles 10, 11, and 12 (if the game version contains them)
  • Play using numbers 1–9 only

The Long Game

  • The next player continues using the previous player’s remaining tiles
  • Rolling doubles grants an extra turn
  • First player to “shut the box” wins

How Long Does a Game Take?

  • Single round: 2–5 minutes
  • Full game session: 15–30 minutes
