Chess is one of the oldest and most respected strategy board games in the world. Played for centuries across cultures, it challenges players to think ahead, plan carefully, and outmaneuver their opponent.

With simple rules but endless depth, chess is a game that can be learned quickly yet takes a lifetime to master.

What You Need to Play

To play chess, you will need:

  • A chessboard with 64 squares (alternating light and dark)
  • 32 pieces (16 per player)

Each player has:

  • 1 King
  • 1 Queen
  • 2 Bishops
  • 2 Knights
  • 2 Rooks
  • 8 Pawns

Chess Setup

  1. Place the board so that each player has a light square in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Arrange pieces on the first two rows:
    • Rooks in the corners
    • Knights next to rooks
    • Bishops next to knights
    • Queen on her matching color
    • King on the remaining square
  3. Pawns fill the row in front of the main pieces.

The player with the light-colored pieces moves first.

Objective of the Game

The goal of chess is to checkmate your opponent’s king.

  • A king is in check when it is under attack
  • A king is in checkmate when it cannot escape capture

When a player is in checkmate, the game is over.

How the Pieces Move

Each piece moves in a unique way:

King

  • Moves one square in any direction
  • Must avoid moving into check

Queen

  • Moves any number of squares in any direction (horizontal, vertical, diagonal)
  • Most powerful piece on the board

Bishop

  • Moves diagonally any number of squares

Knight

  • Moves in an L-shape (two squares in one direction, then one perpendicular)
  • Can jump over other pieces

Rook

  • Moves horizontally or vertically any number of squares

Pawn

  • Moves forward one square (or two on its first move)
  • Captures diagonally
  • Can be promoted to another piece upon reaching the far side

Special Move: Castling

Castling allows you to move your king and rook at the same time.

Conditions:

  • The king and rook have not moved
  • No pieces are between them
  • The king is not in check and does not pass through check

This move helps protect your king and develop your rook.

Basic Rules of Play

  • Players take turns moving one piece at a time
  • You cannot move through your own pieces (except knights)
  • You capture by landing on an opponent’s piece
  • You must respond if your king is in check

How Long Does a Game Take?

  • Casual games: 10–30 minutes
  • Club games: 30–60 minutes
  • Tournament games: 2–5 hours

Strategy Tips for Beginners

  • Control the center of the board
  • Develop your pieces early
  • Protect your king by castling
  • Think ahead and anticipate your opponent’s moves
